Kids Can Be Composers, Too

Bio

Debby Titlow, inspired by her passion for composition classes at the New England Conservatory, has unlocked the "mystery" of composing for hundreds of children throughout 30+ years of teaching in studios, workshops, summer camps, and Arts Lottery Grant-sponsored public school enrichment classes.

Don't tell the kids, but composition is really "applied theory,"just . . . oh, SO much more fun!! Students who compose think it is easy to sight read, feel the dynamics, express the phrase, illustrate texture. For young composers, it's a snap to analyze classical music, find the theme, unravel the development, label the variations, picture the form. Why? Because kids who compose understand music from the inside out!!

With an undergraduate degree in elementary education, Mrs. Titlow specialized in teaching reading in public and private schools. She employs many of the techniques of "process writing" to teaching music literacy: students learn to write what they have "made up" on the piano, and learn to read what they have written.  It's a winning combination!

A lifelong musician, Mrs. Titlow was a consistent award winner throughout high school and college for piano performance, flute trio, and bluegrass banjo. She has studied voice with Dr. Sarah Pelletier, Frances Kadinoff; sung with Robert Shaw and John Rutter; toured the U.S. and Europe with choirs under the direction of Brian Jones and Rodney Wynkoop – most notably a memorable performance at Carnegie Hall in 2006.

Mrs. Titlow has recently moved from Durham, NC to Tallahassee, FL.  While in Durham, she was Composition Chair for North Carolina Music Teachers Association, a member of the national (MTNA), Durham, and Chapel Hill Music Teachers Associations and a frequent presenter and adjudicator.  She performed weekly with the Duke University Chapel Choir and orchestra, where the music of Handel, Bach, Rachmaninoff, Durufle, Ives and Britten is just as thrilling as when it was first composed.
